Common Home Concerns: Baluster Spacing

Balusters are the vertical guards that close the openings under a guardrail. They are often found on stairs, around stairwells, and on decks or balconies. In most cases, the spacing between balusters must be under 4", to act as an effective safety barrier for preventing accidental falls. Gaps between balusters over 4" can allow for entrapment of children, particularly their heads. Washington state home inspectors verify baluster spacing to make sure that you make an informed decision on your next real estate transaction.
